This LEMI inspired class is to help students gain the scholar skills necessary for their lifetime academic journey and develop a love of learning. Key of Liberty is split into two semesters. In the first semester we work on our scholar skills using Early American History as our subject. Students learn how to express their opinions by writing a series of four opinion papers. They learn how to study difficult texts in our document studies, how to give an outstanding presentation in class, how to read informative classics, and probably the most challenging and rewarding of them all: memorize the Declaration of Independence.  By the end of the first semester the students have gained a love and respect for the founders of our country and like the founders, they can do hard things.

In the second semester, we delve into the Post Revolutionary War and study the document which holds our country together: The Constitution of the United States of America.  We study its contents, the process of the American government, and how the new idea of our founders changed the world. We continue to write papers, read books, and give presentations. In this semester, students also learn the skill of test taking by completing three challenging quizzes on the Constitution. By the end of this semester, the students have learned what they can do to increase and keep safe the freedom their founders secured for them.

At the completion of both semesters, we hope to have inspired the students with a love of learning and the confidence with a foundation of knowledge, like their great founders, they can change the world.
