Creative writing is about so much more than telling a fun story. It’s about connecting with characters. It’s about creating worlds previously unimagined. It’s about learning about oneself and others. Half a dozen studies have been done that show compassion and empathy are increased by those who read fiction, and those numbers are increased when individuals are writing stories.
Throughout the year we will focus on the elements of fiction and non-fiction writing: plot, character, setting, diction, syntax, tone, style, and voice. Every week we will have a reading and writing assignment. Students can expect to write:
- Poems
- Micro fiction
- Short fiction
- Non-fiction
- Hybrid Narratives
This class will challenge what students think writing is all about, but if they are willing, it will be the best class they take all year!
Required Materials:
- Becoming a Writer (Dorothea Brande; ISBN 9780874771640)
- Notebook dedicated for this class
- Pen or pencil for taking notes
All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
